Menlo Park, CA
Menlo Park sits directly north of Palo Alto and shares much of the same Stanford-adjacent geography, but it's built its own distinct identity over the past two decades as the headquarters city of Meta (formerly Facebook), whose sprawling campus has made Menlo Park one of the most closely watched company-town-style tech hubs in the entire Bay Area. Sand Hill Road, which runs along the city's western edge toward the Stanford campus, has functioned for decades as the most concentrated address for venture capital firms anywhere in the world, with a density of investment offices along a single road that's arguably shaped more startup funding decisions than any other stretch of pavement in the country. Downtown Menlo Park, centered on Santa Cruz Avenue, has retained a smaller-scale, more traditional suburban commercial character than some of its more built-up neighbors, a contrast that's kept parts of the city feeling notably less dense than the corporate campus development along its eastern edge might suggest. Served by Caltrain with a roughly 50-minute ride into San Francisco, Menlo Park's combination of a major technology company headquarters, the singularly concentrated venture-capital corridor of Sand Hill Road, and a still-modest-scale downtown has made it one of the more economically consequential small cities anywhere in Silicon Valley.
VS
Sausalito, CA
Sausalito sits directly across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, and its waterfront views of both the bridge and the city skyline across the bay have made it one of the most photographed small towns in the entire Bay Area, drawing a steady flow of day-trip visitors alongside its roughly 7,000 year-round residents. The town's floating homes community, moored along its northern waterfront, traces back to a countercultural houseboat movement that took root in the 1950s and '60s and has survived numerous legal and zoning battles since to remain one of the largest and most distinctive floating-home communities in the entire country. Sausalito developed originally as a shipbuilding and ferry town, and the Sausalito Ferry, run today by Golden Gate Ferry, still carries commuters and visitors directly across the bay to San Francisco's Ferry Building in about 30 minutes, a genuinely scenic alternative to driving across the Golden Gate Bridge itself. Bridgeway, the town's main waterfront street, is lined with galleries, restaurants, and shops that have made Sausalito a genuine tourist destination in its own right, and the combination of that waterfront tourism economy with its historic floating-home community and direct ferry access to San Francisco has made Sausalito one of the most visually distinctive towns anywhere in Marin County.
