Merion Station, PA
Merion Station sits at the eastern, Philadelphia-facing end of the Main Line, and it was home for decades to the original Barnes Foundation, a private museum housing one of the most significant collections of Post-Impressionist and early Modern art in the world, assembled by Albert C. Barnes and famously displayed according to his own idiosyncratic, non-chronological hanging system. The foundation's controversial 2012 relocation to a new building in Center City Philadelphia — fought for years in court by neighbors and preservationists who argued Barnes's will had explicitly required the collection to remain in Merion — became a nationally covered case study in the tension between an institution's founding wishes and the practical realities of expanding public access decades later. The Merion Cricket Club, founded in 1865 and still active today, reflects the broader Main Line tradition of English-inspired athletic and social clubs that took root among the area's wealthy Philadelphia families as the railroad suburbs developed through the late 19th century. Merion Station's combination of its complicated, closely watched history as the original home of a world-class private art collection and its continued genteel, club-oriented social character has made it one of the more culturally significant, if quietly modest-sized, communities along the entire Main Line corridor.
VS
Bryn Mawr, PA
Bryn Mawr sits at roughly the midpoint of Philadelphia's Main Line, a string of affluent suburbs that takes its name directly from the Pennsylvania Railroad's original "main line" route running west out of the city, developed deliberately by the railroad through the 1860s to 1880s as a corridor of planned commuter suburbs built to generate steady passenger revenue. Bryn Mawr College, founded in 1885 as one of the original "Seven Sisters" women's colleges, anchors the town's academic identity, and its Gothic-influenced stone campus architecture set a visual template that much of the surrounding Main Line's institutional and residential building has echoed ever since. The town's historic train station, still an active SEPTA Regional Rail stop on the Paoli/Thorndale Line, sits at the center of a small but well-preserved commercial district, giving Bryn Mawr a genuinely walkable core in a region where much of the surrounding development leans more toward large, car-dependent properties. Bryn Mawr's combination of a nationally significant women's college, well-preserved late-19th-century railroad-suburb architecture, and continued direct commuter rail service into Philadelphia has made it one of the most historically representative and consistently desirable stops along the entire Main Line corridor.
