Merion Station, PA
Merion Station sits at the eastern, Philadelphia-facing end of the Main Line, and it was home for decades to the original Barnes Foundation, a private museum housing one of the most significant collections of Post-Impressionist and early Modern art in the world, assembled by Albert C. Barnes and famously displayed according to his own idiosyncratic, non-chronological hanging system. The foundation's controversial 2012 relocation to a new building in Center City Philadelphia — fought for years in court by neighbors and preservationists who argued Barnes's will had explicitly required the collection to remain in Merion — became a nationally covered case study in the tension between an institution's founding wishes and the practical realities of expanding public access decades later. The Merion Cricket Club, founded in 1865 and still active today, reflects the broader Main Line tradition of English-inspired athletic and social clubs that took root among the area's wealthy Philadelphia families as the railroad suburbs developed through the late 19th century. Merion Station's combination of its complicated, closely watched history as the original home of a world-class private art collection and its continued genteel, club-oriented social character has made it one of the more culturally significant, if quietly modest-sized, communities along the entire Main Line corridor.
VS
Villanova, PA
Villanova is home to Villanova University, an Augustinian Catholic institution founded in 1842 that's built one of the most recognized college basketball programs in the country, winning NCAA men's national championships in 1985, 2016, and 2018 — a run of championship success that's given the small Main Line community a level of national sports visibility disproportionate to its modest year-round population. The university's campus, centered around Lancaster Avenue, occupies a substantial portion of the community's developed land, giving Villanova a genuine college-town character layered on top of the broader Main Line's identity as a corridor of affluent Philadelphia commuter suburbs. Like its Main Line neighbors, Villanova developed directly along the Pennsylvania Railroad's original commuter line west from Philadelphia, and the SEPTA Regional Rail station that still serves the community today sits within easy walking distance of the university's main campus buildings. Villanova's combination of a nationally championship-winning basketball program, a substantial university campus footprint within an otherwise residential Main Line community, and continued direct commuter rail access into Philadelphia has made it one of the more nationally recognized names among the string of Main Line suburbs west of the city.
