Merlin Entertainments
Merlin Entertainments was founded in 1999 in the United Kingdom, and the company grew into the second-largest operator of visitor attractions in the world by revenue, built substantially through an aggressive strategy of acquiring existing attraction brands rather than developing entirely new parks from scratch. The company's portfolio includes Legoland theme parks, operated under license from the Danish toy company Lego, along with Madame Tussauds wax museums and various Sea Life aquariums, giving Merlin an unusually diverse mix of attraction types compared to competitors focused primarily on traditional amusement park rides. Merlin has been majority-owned at various points by private equity firms and the Lego brand's own holding company, KIRKBI, reflecting a corporate ownership structure distinct from the more directly entertainment-industry-integrated ownership of competitors like Disney and Universal. Merlin Entertainments's combination of its acquisition-driven growth strategy and its unusually diverse portfolio spanning Legoland, Madame Tussauds, and Sea Life has made it one of the most structurally distinctive major attraction operators in the global theme park industry.
VS
Six Flags
Six Flags was founded in 1961 with the opening of Six Flags Over Texas near Arlington, Texas, and the company built its identity and name around Texas's history under six different national flags, before expanding into a chain of regional amusement parks across the United States rather than pursuing Disney's single-mega-destination model. The company grew into one of the largest regional amusement park operators in the world, positioning its parks as accessible day-trip destinations for regional visitors rather than multi-day vacation destinations, a meaningfully different business model from destination resorts like Walt Disney World. Six Flags became particularly known for its aggressive roller coaster arms race, frequently competing to open the world's tallest, fastest, or longest roller coasters at various points across its park network, a marketing strategy built around individual record-setting thrill rides rather than broader immersive theming. Six Flags's combination of its regional day-trip park network model and its sustained focus on record-setting roller coasters has made it one of the most significant amusement park operators in the American regional theme park industry.
