Metropolis
Metropolis, released in 1927 and directed by Fritz Lang, depicted a dystopian future city sharply divided between a wealthy ruling class living in luxury above ground and an exploited working class laboring in dangerous conditions underground, establishing much of the visual and thematic template that subsequent science fiction dystopian filmmaking has continued to draw from. The film's massive production budget, one of the largest in German film history at the time, funded elaborate miniature effects and expressionist set designs that created a visually striking, architecturally ambitious vision of a future city unlike anything previously achieved on screen. Significant portions of the film were lost for decades after its original release, with various truncated versions circulating internationally, until a nearly complete print was rediscovered in Argentina in 2008, allowing for a substantially restored version far closer to Lang's original intended cut. Metropolis's visual depiction of a towering, vertically stratified future city, along with its iconic robotic "Maria" character, directly influenced the visual design of numerous subsequent science fiction films, and the film remains one of the most historically significant and frequently studied works of the entire silent film era.
VS
Nosferatu
Nosferatu, released in 1922 and directed by F.W. Murnau, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, made without securing the rights to the source material, and a subsequent lawsuit from Stoker's widow resulted in a court order demanding all copies of the film be destroyed — an order that was only partially carried out, allowing surviving prints to preserve the film for later generations. Max Schreck's performance as the vampire Count Orlok, featuring deliberately exaggerated, rodent-like makeup and unsettling physical movement, established one of the most influential visual depictions of a vampire in film history, distinct from the more conventionally handsome later portrayals popularized by subsequent Dracula adaptations. The film's use of genuine outdoor locations and natural lighting, unusual for its era's more common reliance on artificial studio sets, gave Nosferatu an eerie, naturalistic visual quality that significantly influenced the development of German Expressionist horror filmmaking. Its central mythological addition that sunlight itself could destroy a vampire, a detail not present in Stoker's original novel, became one of the most enduringly influential vampire lore conventions in subsequent popular culture, demonstrating the film's lasting influence well beyond its own troubled and legally contested production history.
