Middlebury College
Middlebury College, founded in 1800, is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the country, and its foreign language programs are widely regarded as among the very best of any American college, anchored by the Middlebury Language Schools, an intensive immersion summer program requiring students to speak only their target language for the program's entire duration. The college's Bread Loaf School of English and its associated writers' conference, one of the oldest and most prestigious literary conferences in the country, have drawn major American writers to the Vermont campus for summer programming for nearly a century. Middlebury's rural Vermont setting and its ski team's strong competitive tradition, along with the college's proximity to significant skiing terrain, have made winter sports a significant part of campus culture, similar to several other elite New England liberal arts colleges in mountainous settings. The college's combination of genuinely elite liberal arts academics, its nationally leading foreign language immersion programs, and its historic literary conference tradition has made Middlebury one of the most distinctive top liberal arts colleges in the country.
VS
University of Vermont
The University of Vermont, founded in 1791, is the state's flagship public research university, and it's often described as a "Public Ivy," a term for public universities offering an academic experience comparable to the Ivy League, reflecting UVM's relatively selective admissions and strong liberal arts core. The university's environmental science and sustainability programs have built strong national reputations, drawing directly on Vermont's broader reputation for environmental policy leadership, and UVM's medical school and its affiliated hospital system are significant regional healthcare providers for northern New England. UVM's Burlington campus, overlooking Lake Champlain with views of the Adirondack Mountains across the water, is frequently cited among the most scenic public university settings in the country, and the surrounding city of Burlington has developed a reputation as one of the most livable small cities in the Northeast. The university's combination of genuine "Public Ivy" academic selectivity, its nationally recognized environmental studies programs, and its scenic lakefront setting has made UVM one of the more distinctively positioned public flagship universities in New England.
