Millsaps College
Millsaps College, founded in 1890, is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the South, and its small size, around 700 undergraduates, lets the college maintain unusually close faculty-student relationships relative to Mississippi's larger public universities. The college's Else School of Management offers one of the only accredited undergraduate business programs housed within a small liberal arts college in the state, giving Millsaps students access to genuine pre-professional business training alongside the broader liberal arts curriculum. Millsaps's Jackson, Mississippi campus gives students access to the state capital's business, legal, and government institutions, and the college's continued United Methodist Church affiliation shapes aspects of its institutional mission even as its student body includes students from a broad range of religious backgrounds. The college's combination of genuine academic selectivity, its accredited undergraduate business school, and its capital-city location has made Millsaps the leading small private liberal arts college in Mississippi, particularly for students seeking a smaller-scale alternative to the state's larger public flagships.
VS
Tougaloo College
Tougaloo College, founded in 1869 by the American Missionary Association, played a central role in the Mississippi civil rights movement, serving as a key organizing and planning site for activists during the 1960s, including hosting Freedom Riders and civil rights leaders when few other institutions in the state were willing to do so. The college's small size and its historic campus, built partly on the grounds of a former antebellum plantation, give Tougaloo a physically and historically significant setting directly tied to the institution's founding mission of educating formerly enslaved people and their descendants. Tougaloo's pre-medical program has built a strong reputation for placing graduates into medical school relative to the college's small size, continuing a broader HBCU tradition of producing a disproportionate share of Black physicians relative to institutional size. The college's direct historical role as a civil rights movement organizing hub, combined with its continued mission serving Mississippi's Black community, has made Tougaloo one of the most historically significant small HBCUs in the country, with a legacy extending well beyond its modest enrollment size.
