Mississippi State University
Mississippi State University, founded in 1878 as the state's land-grant institution, has built one of the strongest agricultural and veterinary medicine programs in the Southeast, reflecting its founding mission serving the state's significant agricultural economy. The university's aerospace engineering program benefits from a close research partnership with NASA's Stennis Space Center, located within the state, and MSU's High Performance Computing Collaboratory has become a significant regional hub for supercomputing research across multiple applied science fields. MSU's business school and its forestry program have built solid regional reputations, and the university's continued strength in applied agricultural and engineering sciences reflects its land-grant founding mission even as the broader institution has grown into a comprehensive research university. The university's combination of strong agricultural and veterinary research, its NASA-connected aerospace engineering program, and its Bulldogs athletic tradition has made Mississippi State the clear complement to Ole Miss within the state's public university system.
VS
Tougaloo College
Tougaloo College, founded in 1869 by the American Missionary Association, played a central role in the Mississippi civil rights movement, serving as a key organizing and planning site for activists during the 1960s, including hosting Freedom Riders and civil rights leaders when few other institutions in the state were willing to do so. The college's small size and its historic campus, built partly on the grounds of a former antebellum plantation, give Tougaloo a physically and historically significant setting directly tied to the institution's founding mission of educating formerly enslaved people and their descendants. Tougaloo's pre-medical program has built a strong reputation for placing graduates into medical school relative to the college's small size, continuing a broader HBCU tradition of producing a disproportionate share of Black physicians relative to institutional size. The college's direct historical role as a civil rights movement organizing hub, combined with its continued mission serving Mississippi's Black community, has made Tougaloo one of the most historically significant small HBCUs in the country, with a legacy extending well beyond its modest enrollment size.
