Montrose Beach
Montrose Beach, on Chicago's North Side, combines one of the city's widest stretches of Lake Michigan sand with the adjacent Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary, a protected dune and wetland habitat that's made the beach one of the most significant urban birdwatching spots in the Midwest. Its dune ecosystem drew significant national attention in 2019 when a pair of endangered piping plovers nested there, becoming the first pair to successfully nest in Cook County in more than 60 years, and the resulting conservation effort turned "Monty and Rose," as the birds were nicknamed, into genuine local celebrities. The beach's wide, open sand and its dedicated kite-flying area, along with a popular beach volleyball scene, give it a broader recreational identity beyond its ecological significance, appealing to both casual beachgoers and dedicated birdwatchers drawn specifically by the adjacent sanctuary. For a Chicago beaches list, Montrose Beach is the essential "beach and bird sanctuary" entry — a wide North Side shoreline whose adjacent dune habitat became nationally notable after hosting Chicago's first successful piping plover nesting in over 60 years.
VS
Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach, on Chicago's South Side, offers one of the widest and most spacious stretches of Lake Michigan sand in the city, along with a significant piece of civil rights history: the site of organized 1960s wade-in protests challenging the beach's then-informal segregation. Those demonstrations, part of the broader civil rights movement's push for equal access to Chicago's public recreational spaces, make Rainbow Beach one of the more historically significant beaches on the city's shoreline, a history the surrounding park and community have worked to preserve and commemorate. Its position on the South Side, somewhat removed from the North Side's denser concentration of beaches, has made it a particularly important recreational resource for South Side neighborhoods historically underserved relative to the city's more heavily invested-in North Side lakefront. For a Chicago beaches list, Rainbow Beach is the essential "civil rights history on the sand" entry — a wide South Side beach and the site of 1960s wade-in protests against segregated beach access, carrying real historical weight alongside its recreational role today.
