Monty's Raw Bar
Monty's Raw Bar has operated on the Coconut Grove waterfront for decades, combining a casual raw bar and tiki-style outdoor seating directly on Biscayne Bay with a long-running local reputation as the place to get oysters, conch, and stone crab in a genuinely low-key, marina-adjacent setting. Its outdoor, palm-thatched tiki bar atmosphere, with live music and direct water views over the Coconut Grove marina, gives Monty's a distinctly different feel from more formal Miami seafood restaurants, leaning into a casual, drinks-and-raw-bar-first identity. The restaurant's location within the same waterfront complex as the Coconut Grove marina has made it a longtime gathering spot for the neighborhood's boating community specifically, giving it a genuinely local, non-touristy regular clientele alongside visitors. For a Miami seafood list, Monty's is the essential "raw bar with your feet basically in the water" entry — a casual, tiki-style Coconut Grove institution built around oysters, conch, and a direct marina view rather than a formal dining room.
VS
Joe's Stone Crab
Joe's Stone Crab has operated in Miami Beach since 1913, founded by Joe Weiss and now run by the fourth generation of his family, making it one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in Florida and the single most closely identified restaurant with Miami's stone crab tradition. The restaurant is only fully open during Florida's stone crab season, roughly mid-October through early May, since regulations require harvesters to remove just one claw from each crab and return it to the water to regenerate, a sustainable harvesting practice Joe's has built its entire identity and supply chain around for over a century. Its enormous scale — seating hundreds of diners nightly during peak season with waits that can stretch for hours without reservations for large parties — reflects a level of sustained demand few other seafood restaurants anywhere in the country have maintained across more than 100 years of continuous operation. For a Miami seafood list, Joe's Stone Crab is the essential "the original, still the standard" entry — a fourth-generation, century-old institution whose seasonal stone crab claws remain the dish most associated with Miami seafood dining anywhere in the city.
