Morcheeba
Morcheeba brought a warmer, more accessible strand of trip-hop to wider audiences through their 1996 debut album "Who Can You Trust?" and its 1998 follow-up "Big Calm," pairing Skye Edwards's soulful, jazz-influenced vocals with the Godfrey brothers' melodic, guitar-and-sample-based production. Their sound distinguished itself from the genre's darker Bristol-scene contemporaries by leaning into a more soulful, blues- and jazz-influenced warmth, giving Morcheeba's catalog broader mainstream radio accessibility relative to Portishead's or Tricky's more confrontational sonic approach. The band's continued commercial success through the late 1990s and 2000s, including sustained European chart presence, helped extend trip-hop's mainstream commercial relevance well past the genre's initial mid-1990s critical peak. Their combination of their distinctively warmer, soul-influenced take on trip-hop and their sustained mainstream commercial success has made Morcheeba one of the genre's most consistently popular and accessible acts.
VS
Massive Attack
Massive Attack helped originate trip-hop as a genre through their 1991 debut album "Blue Lines," combining hip-hop-influenced beats and sampling with a slower, more atmospheric and dub-influenced production style that became the foundational template for what critics began calling the "Bristol sound." Their 1998 album "Mezzanine" is widely regarded as one of the genre's essential recordings, incorporating darker, more industrial and post-punk-influenced textures that expanded trip-hop's sonic palette well beyond its more purely downtempo hip-hop origins. The collective's rotating cast of guest vocalists, including Horace Andy, Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, and Tracey Thorn, gave their albums a distinctive multi-voiced identity that distinguished Massive Attack's approach from acts built around a single consistent lead vocalist. Their combination of "Blue Lines's" foundational role originating the genre and "Mezzanine's" continued genre-defining evolution has made Massive Attack almost universally regarded as the single most important act in trip-hop's history.
