Mount Lebanon, PA
Mount Lebanon developed substantially in the early 20th century as one of Pittsburgh's first streetcar suburbs, with the Pittsburgh Railways Company's Beechview-Mount Lebanon line, opened in 1913, connecting the growing community directly to downtown Pittsburgh and shaping much of its early residential development pattern along the rail corridor. That streetcar line has survived essentially intact into the present day as part of the Pittsburgh Regional Transit light rail system, making Mount Lebanon one of the relatively few American suburbs still served by a rail transit line dating back more than a century to the original streetcar era. The community's Uptown business district, built along Washington Road near the light rail station, has retained a walkable, small-town commercial character that's stood in contrast to the more purely residential development found in some neighboring South Hills communities. Mount Lebanon's combination of a rare, still-operating century-old streetcar-to-light-rail transit connection and a walkable Uptown commercial core has made it one of the more historically continuous and consistently desirable suburbs anywhere in Pittsburgh's South Hills region.
VS
Oakmont, PA
Oakmont is home to the Oakmont Country Club, founded in 1903 and widely regarded as one of the most difficult and historically significant golf courses in the United States, having hosted more US Open championships than any other course in the country — a record that's made the small borough a recurring fixture in major professional golf coverage for well over a century. The course's famously fast, undulating greens and deep bunkers, including the notorious "Church Pews" bunker complex, have made Oakmont a benchmark for championship-level golf course difficulty, with the club deliberately maintaining that demanding character across generations of course superintendents specifically to preserve its reputation. Beyond the golf course, Oakmont's small, walkable downtown along Allegheny River Boulevard has preserved a modest but genuine early-20th-century commercial district, giving the borough a quiet residential character distinct from its outsized national golf reputation. Oakmont's combination of hosting one of the most historically significant championship golf courses in American golf history and its otherwise quiet, small-town residential character has made it one of the more nationally recognized small suburbs anywhere in the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
