Nadia Comăneci
Nadia Comăneci became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10.0, on the uneven bars at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, a score so unprecedented that the scoreboard, which had never been built to display four digits, showed 1.00 instead because its designers hadn't imagined a perfect score was possible. She went on to score six more perfect 10s at those same Montreal Games and won three gold medals at just 14 years old, a performance that made her an instant global celebrity and reshaped what judges and audiences expected elite gymnastics execution to look like. Comăneci added two more Olympic golds at the 1980 Moscow Games, and her combination of technical precision and an unusually mature, composed competitive demeanor for someone so young became the template other national gymnastics programs spent the following decade trying to replicate. She defected from communist Romania to the United States in 1989, a dramatic late-night escape across the border into Hungary that made international headlines, and her 1976 perfect 10 remains one of the most iconic single moments in Olympic history, still referenced any time a gymnast approaches flawless execution.
VS
Larisa Latynina
Larisa Latynina won 18 Olympic medals across three Games for the Soviet Union, 1956, 1960, and 1964, a total that stood as the record for most Olympic medals by any athlete in any sport, male or female, for 48 years until Michael Phelps finally surpassed it in 2012. Nine of Latynina's 18 medals were gold, and her medal haul came across a demanding range of individual and team events — floor exercise, vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and the all-around — reflecting an all-around versatility across every gymnastics apparatus that few gymnasts before or since have matched at that volume. She competed while raising a family and continued winning medals into her late 20s, an age at which most gymnasts, then and now, have long since retired from elite competition, giving her an unusually long competitive career in a sport that typically rewards adolescent bodies. After retiring, Latynina became the Soviet national team's head coach, guiding the program through its continued dominance at the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Olympics, extending her influence on the sport for another generation beyond her own record-setting competitive career.
