Nadia Comăneci
Nadia Comăneci became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10.0, on the uneven bars at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, a score so unprecedented that the scoreboard, which had never been built to display four digits, showed 1.00 instead because its designers hadn't imagined a perfect score was possible. She went on to score six more perfect 10s at those same Montreal Games and won three gold medals at just 14 years old, a performance that made her an instant global celebrity and reshaped what judges and audiences expected elite gymnastics execution to look like. Comăneci added two more Olympic golds at the 1980 Moscow Games, and her combination of technical precision and an unusually mature, composed competitive demeanor for someone so young became the template other national gymnastics programs spent the following decade trying to replicate. She defected from communist Romania to the United States in 1989, a dramatic late-night escape across the border into Hungary that made international headlines, and her 1976 perfect 10 remains one of the most iconic single moments in Olympic history, still referenced any time a gymnast approaches flawless execution.
VS
Simone Biles
Simone Biles's medal count — 23 World Championship medals and 11 Olympic medals across three Games, 2016, 2020, and 2024 — is the largest in gymnastics history, a total built across nearly a decade of competition at a level of sustained dominance the sport had never previously seen from one athlete. Four separate skills across floor exercise, vault, and balance beam are named after Biles in the sport's official code of points — "the Biles" — each recognizing a move she was the first gymnast ever to successfully land in international competition, a level of technical innovation that's reshaped what's considered possible in elite gymnastics. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Biles withdrew from several finals citing "the twisties," a disorienting loss of spatial awareness mid-air that made continuing to compete physically dangerous, a decision that drew global attention to athlete mental health and was widely credited with normalizing conversations about withdrawing from competition for psychological safety reasons. She returned at the 2024 Paris Olympics to win three more golds, adding to a medal collection that, combined with her generation-defining skill difficulty and her willingness to publicly prioritize mental health over competing hurt, is why she's now almost universally regarded as the greatest gymnast in history.
