National Lampoon's Vacation
National Lampoon's Vacation, released in 1983, follows a family's disaster-plagued cross-country road trip to a fictional amusement park called Walley World, and Chevy Chase's performance as the relentlessly optimistic family patriarch, undeterred by escalating catastrophes, established the film as one of the defining comedies of the 1980s. The film's willingness to depict genuinely dark comedic material, including a memorable subplot involving a deceased relative's body being tied to the roof of the family car, distinguished it from more family-friendly road trip comedies while still maintaining broad mainstream commercial appeal. Its massive commercial success launched a long-running franchise of sequels, and the film's specific comedic template — a well-meaning father's escalating series of disastrous decisions during a family vacation — established a widely imitated structural approach for subsequent family road trip comedies. National Lampoon's Vacation's combination of dark comedic escalation and Chase's committed comedic performance made it one of the most influential and commercially successful road trip comedies of the 1980s, and the film's satirical commentary on the American family vacation ideal remains a significant part of its lasting cultural resonance.
VS
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Planes, Trains and Automobiles, released in 1987 and written and directed by John Hughes, follows two mismatched travelers — Steve Martin's uptight businessman and John Candy's well-meaning but overbearing shower curtain ring salesman — struggling through a chaotic multi-day journey home for Thanksgiving after their flight is canceled. The film's blend of broad physical comedy with genuine emotional depth, particularly in its final act revealing Candy's character's loneliness following his wife's death, gave the film an unexpected emotional resonance beneath its comedic road trip structure. Candy's performance is widely regarded as one of his finest and most emotionally complete, and the film's willingness to let its central mismatched-buddy comedy gradually reveal genuine pathos distinguished it from more purely farcical travel comedies of its era. Planes, Trains and Automobiles' combination of genuine comedic chaos and its unexpectedly moving emotional conclusion has made it one of the most beloved Thanksgiving-themed films in American cinema, and it remains widely regarded as one of the finest travel comedies ever made.
