National Mall
The National Mall's basic layout traces back to Pierre L'Enfant's original 1791 plan for the new federal capital, though the open, monument-lined greensward familiar today didn't take shape until the 1901–1902 McMillan Plan reorganized and formalized the space decades after L'Enfant's original vision had been left largely unrealized. The Mall connects the US Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial along a roughly two-mile stretch, flanked by the Smithsonian Institution's museums — the largest museum and research complex in the world — nearly all of which offer free admission, an unusual policy for major cultural institutions maintained specifically to keep the nation's collections accessible to the public. The Mall has served as the site of some of the most significant public demonstrations in American history, including the 1963 March on Washington and numerous presidential inaugurations, its open sightlines and central location making it the default staging ground for the country's largest public gatherings. For a Washington, DC attractions list, the National Mall is the essential "the country's front lawn" entry — an 1901 reorganization of L'Enfant's original capital plan that's hosted free world-class museums and the nation's most significant public demonstrations for well over a century.
VS
The White House
The White House has served as the residence and workplace of every US president except George Washington since John Adams moved in during 1800, making it one of the oldest continuously used government buildings in the entire country and the oldest public building in Washington, DC. British troops burned the building during the War of 1812, leaving only the exterior sandstone walls standing, and the subsequent reconstruction is credited with the tradition of painting the building white specifically to cover the resulting smoke and fire damage — though the building may have already been whitewashed before the fire for weatherproofing reasons. The building has grown substantially from its original single-residence design, adding the West Wing in 1901 under Theodore Roosevelt and the East Wing later, to accommodate a growing executive staff, while the original residence portion has undergone several major renovations, including a near-total internal rebuild during the Truman administration after engineers found the structure dangerously close to collapse. For a Washington, DC attractions list, the White House is the essential "burned, rebuilt, still standing" entry — an 1800 presidential residence torched by British troops in 1812, now the oldest continuously used government building in the country and the literal center of the executive branch.
