New Balance
New Balance traces its origins to 1906 in Boston, initially founded to make arch supports and orthopedic shoe inserts before gradually moving into athletic footwear, and it built a long-standing reputation around fit technology, including offering shoes in multiple widths uncommon among competitors. The company became notable for maintaining significant domestic manufacturing in the United States and United Kingdom even as most competitors moved production overseas, marketing this "Made in USA" manufacturing commitment as a distinctive part of its brand identity for decades. New Balance's association with serious, function-focused runners rather than fashion-driven sneaker culture gave it a specific reputation as a brand favored by dedicated athletes and, more recently, an unexpected embrace by younger consumers as a nostalgic, "dad shoe" fashion statement. New Balance's combination of its century-long history rooted in orthopedic shoe technology and its distinctive commitment to domestic manufacturing has made it one of the most differentiated athletic apparel brands in the industry.
VS
Adidas
Adidas was founded in Germany in 1949 by Adolf "Adi" Dassler, following a bitter split with his brother Rudolf, who went on to found rival sportswear company Puma in the very same small town, creating a decades-long sibling rivalry that split the local community. The company's shoes were famously worn by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (before the Adidas brand name officially existed, under Dassler's earlier shoe company) and later by numerous Olympic athletes, establishing an early association with elite athletic performance that shaped the brand's identity for decades. Adidas's distinctive three-stripe logo became one of the most recognized brand marks in sports apparel, and the company's later expansion into hip-hop and streetwear culture, notably through its partnership with Run-D.M.C. in the 1980s, demonstrated an early and influential crossover between athletic brands and mainstream youth culture. Adidas's combination of its origins in a historic sibling rivalry with Puma and its pioneering crossover into hip-hop culture has made it one of the most globally significant athletic apparel brands in the industry.
