New College of Florida
New College of Florida, founded in 1960 as a private liberal arts college before becoming part of the state university system in 1975, has long operated as Florida's designated "honors college," admitting a small, academically selective student body onto a public-university tuition structure that's unusually generous relative to the caliber of instruction offered. The college's academic model replaces traditional letter grades with narrative evaluations for most of its history, and students design individualized study plans called "contracts" rather than following a fixed distribution of required courses, a structure that gives New College one of the most unconventional undergraduate curricula among American public colleges. With an enrollment under 700 students, New College maintains an unusually small, intimate campus culture directly on Sarasota Bay, and its small size has historically let it maintain the kind of close faculty mentorship more typical of elite private liberal arts colleges than public universities. The college underwent a highly publicized and contentious leadership and curriculum overhaul beginning in 2023, after a new state-appointed board of trustees moved to reshape its academic and cultural direction — a still-unfolding transition that's made New College one of the most closely watched public liberal arts colleges in the country.
VS
Florida State University
Florida State University traces its roots to 1851 and operates the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world, a distinction that gives FSU physics and materials science researchers access to experimental equipment no other university in the country can offer. The university's film school, the College of Motion Picture Arts, is consistently ranked among the best in the country, an unusual specialty for a large public university and one that's produced a steady stream of working Hollywood directors, cinematographers, and editors relative to the program's small, selective cohort size. FSU's rise in national research rankings over the past decade, driven by increased state investment and a deliberate push for federal research funding, has moved the university into the tier of top-25 public research universities, a jump that mirrors similar strategic investments at peer institutions like the University of Florida. The university's Seminoles athletic programs, particularly a football program with multiple national championships, have long given FSU a national profile that predates its more recent academic rise, and the combination of major-program athletics and growing research prestige has become central to how the university markets itself to prospective students.
