Nico's Pier 38
Nico's Pier 38 operates directly on Honolulu Harbor's working commercial fishing pier, giving it uniquely direct access to freshly landed fish from the same boats that supply much of Oahu's broader seafood supply chain, a genuine dock-to-counter connection few other poke spots on the island can match. Founded by a French-trained chef, the restaurant combines a full sit-down dining menu with a dedicated poke counter and market, offering both a casual takeout poke option and a more complete waterfront dining experience within the same working harbor complex. Its harborside location, with outdoor seating overlooking the actual fishing boats and harbor activity, gives Nico's a genuinely different atmosphere than Honolulu's more inland poke counters, directly connecting the dining experience to the working fishing industry supplying the fish itself. For a Honolulu poke list, Nico's Pier 38 is the essential "straight off the boat" entry — a working harbor restaurant and market with about as direct a connection between the fishing dock and the poke counter as exists anywhere on Oahu.
VS
Ono Seafood
Ono Seafood has operated as a small, no-frills poke counter in Kapahulu, near Waikiki, for decades, consistently ranking among local residents' most cited answers for the best traditional poke in Honolulu despite its genuinely modest, market-style storefront. Its shoyu poke, built on the classic combination of raw ahi tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, green onion, and seaweed, sticks closely to the traditional formula rather than chasing the more elaborate mainland-style poke bowl trend, with lines out the door reflecting its reputation among locals specifically. The shop's minimal seating and takeout-focused format, selling poke by the pound from behind a simple counter, reflects poke's original identity as an everyday grab-and-go food rather than a sit-down restaurant experience, a distinction Ono has maintained even as poke's national popularity has grown considerably. For a Honolulu poke list, Ono Seafood is the essential "traditional, no fuss" entry — a small Kapahulu counter serving classic shoyu poke by the pound to a steady stream of local regulars who consider it the standard the rest of the island is measured against.
