Night of the Living Dead
Night of the Living Dead, released in 1968 and directed by George A. Romero, established virtually the entire modern zombie genre's foundational conventions — reanimated corpses craving human flesh, infection spreading through bites, and survivors trapped in a confined location fending off an escalating siege. The film's casting of Black actor Duane Jones in the lead role, unusual for a horror film of its era and never explicitly addressed within the film's own script, gave Night of the Living Dead an implicit racial dimension that became increasingly significant to critical interpretations of the film in the decades following its release, particularly given its ending. Made on an extremely modest budget using black-and-white film stock partly for cost reasons, the movie's genuinely bleak, unflinching tone and its willingness to kill off its characters without a conventional happy resolution distinguished it sharply from more escapist horror films of its era. Night of the Living Dead's foundational role in establishing the zombie genre's core rules and conventions has made it one of the most influential horror films ever made, and virtually every subsequent zombie film owes a direct structural debt to the template Romero established with this single independent production.

28 Days Later
28 Days Later, released in 2002 and directed by Danny Boyle, reinvigorated the zombie genre for a new generation by introducing fast-moving, sprinting infected individuals rather than the traditional slow-shambling zombie archetype, dramatically increasing the visceral immediacy and threat level of its infected antagonists. The film's technical use of early digital video cameras, giving the movie a gritty, immediate visual texture distinct from traditional film cinematography, let Boyle's team film extensive sequences depicting a deserted, post-outbreak London using genuinely empty city streets captured during brief early-morning shooting windows. Its origin story, tracing the outbreak to a highly contagious "rage virus" spread through infected blood rather than the more traditionally supernatural zombie origins of earlier films, gave 28 Days Later a more scientifically plausible framing that influenced numerous subsequent "infected" rather than strictly undead zombie narratives. 28 Days Later's combination of its genre-redefining fast-zombie innovation and its technically innovative low-budget digital filmmaking approach made it one of the most influential horror films of the 2000s, directly inspiring a wave of subsequent films and video games adopting its fast-infected model.
