Night of the Living Dead
Night of the Living Dead, released in 1968 and directed by George A. Romero, established virtually the entire modern zombie genre's foundational conventions — reanimated corpses craving human flesh, infection spreading through bites, and survivors trapped in a confined location fending off an escalating siege. The film's casting of Black actor Duane Jones in the lead role, unusual for a horror film of its era and never explicitly addressed within the film's own script, gave Night of the Living Dead an implicit racial dimension that became increasingly significant to critical interpretations of the film in the decades following its release, particularly given its ending. Made on an extremely modest budget using black-and-white film stock partly for cost reasons, the movie's genuinely bleak, unflinching tone and its willingness to kill off its characters without a conventional happy resolution distinguished it sharply from more escapist horror films of its era. Night of the Living Dead's foundational role in establishing the zombie genre's core rules and conventions has made it one of the most influential horror films ever made, and virtually every subsequent zombie film owes a direct structural debt to the template Romero established with this single independent production.
VS
World War Z
World War Z, released in 2013 and loosely based on Max Brooks's oral history novel, depicted a global zombie pandemic on a significantly larger geographic and civilizational scale than most previous zombie films, following a former United Nations investigator racing across multiple countries to find a potential solution. The film's fast-moving zombie hordes, depicted through large-scale, often digitally assisted swarming sequences, including a memorable scene of zombies climbing over each other to scale a massive defensive wall, pushed the visual scale of zombie outbreak depiction well beyond most earlier films' more contained, localized settings. Its notoriously troubled production, including extensive last-minute reshoots that significantly altered the film's third act and ending, reflected significant behind-the-scenes struggles that were widely reported in entertainment media before the film's eventual release. World War Z's massive commercial success, despite its production difficulties, demonstrated the zombie genre's continued viability as a genuinely large-scale, big-budget blockbuster concept rather than a niche horror subgenre, and the film's global outbreak scale influenced subsequent large-scale pandemic-themed media.
