Nintendo
Nintendo was founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, originally as a manufacturer of handmade Japanese playing cards called hanafuda, nearly a century before the company entered the video game industry at all. The company transitioned into video games in the late 1970s and became a defining force in the industry with the 1985 North American launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System, widely credited with reviving the American home video game market after the industry's severe 1983 crash. Nintendo's stable of first-party franchises, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon, have become among the best-selling and most culturally recognized video game properties in history, and the company has consistently pursued a distinctive strategy of innovative hardware, from the Game Boy to the Wii's motion controls to the hybrid handheld-and-console Nintendo Switch. Nintendo's combination of its remarkable 19th-century origins as a playing card company and its role reviving the American video game industry after its 1983 crash has made it one of the most historically significant companies in gaming.
VS
Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts was founded in 1982 by former Apple employee Trip Hawkins, who modeled the company's early marketing and packaging after the music industry, treating game designers like recording artists with prominent on-box billing at a time when most publishers kept developers anonymous. The company grew into one of the largest video game publishers in the world, building a portfolio dominated by major sports franchises, including Madden NFL, FIFA (now EA Sports FC), and NHL, alongside other major franchise lines like The Sims and Battlefield. EA has drawn significant industry and regulatory attention over the years for its aggressive monetization practices in some titles, including loot boxes and microtransactions, controversies that became a notable flashpoint in broader industry debates over in-game monetization and gambling-adjacent mechanics. Electronic Arts's combination of its pioneering "software artists" marketing approach and its dominant, decades-long grip on major licensed sports game franchises has made it one of the most commercially significant publishers in gaming history.
