Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf launched in 2010 as the first mass-market, mainstream-priced all-electric vehicle from a major global automaker, arriving well before Tesla had built a factory capable of true high-volume production, and it went on to become the best-selling electric car in the world through most of the following decade, a title it eventually lost to Tesla's Model 3 as EV sales scaled up globally. Its early success established basic EV ownership patterns most drivers now take for granted — home charging as a daily routine rather than a novelty, regenerative braking that recovers energy under deceleration, and a driving experience most first-time EV buyers found immediately, sometimes surprisingly, more refined and quiet than an equivalent gasoline compact. The Leaf's air-cooled (rather than liquid-cooled) battery pack, a cost-saving design choice in its early generations, became a genuine point of criticism as owners in hot climates reported faster battery degradation than liquid-cooled rivals experienced — a real engineering trade-off that later Nissan EVs and most competing manufacturers' subsequent designs moved away from. Built at Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee plant for the US market (alongside production in Japan and the UK for other regions), the Leaf's role as the vehicle that proved genuine mass-market demand existed for an affordable, everyday electric car — years before Tesla, GM, or most legacy automakers had a comparable volume offering on sale — makes it one of the most historically significant vehicles in the entire transition toward electric transportation.
VS
Chevrolet Bolt EV
The Chevrolet Bolt EV launched for the 2017 model year as the first mass-market, affordable electric vehicle to offer over 200 miles of EPA-rated range at a starting price under $40,000, beating Tesla's more expensive, longer-anticipated Model 3 to market by several months and earning Motor Trend's Car of the Year award before the Model 3 had even reached significant production volume. Built on a dedicated EV platform rather than adapted from an existing gasoline model, the Bolt prioritized interior space and practicality inside a genuinely compact footprint, using a tall-roof hatchback body style that maximized headroom and cargo capacity in a way most competing compact EVs of its era didn't attempt. The nameplate's later years were defined by a serious and costly setback: a series of battery-fire incidents linked to manufacturing defects in cells supplied by LG Energy Solution led to a total recall of every Bolt ever built in 2021, one of the largest and most expensive EV recalls in industry history, requiring GM to replace battery modules across the entire fleet at significant cost. Built at GM's Orion Assembly plant in Michigan, the Bolt was discontinued after the 2023 model year even as GM confirmed plans to revive the nameplate on a newer platform — a reminder that even a genuinely important "first affordable long-range EV" milestone car can still be undone, at least temporarily, by a serious quality failure in the exact battery technology its entire value proposition depended on.
