Norm Duke
Norm Duke has won PBA Tour titles across five different decades, from the 1980s through the 2020s, a level of sustained career longevity at the sport's highest competitive level that's essentially unmatched among professional bowlers, reflecting both remarkable physical durability and continued technical relevance across dramatically different eras of lane conditions and ball technology. His combined career title total places him among the top handful of PBA Tour bowlers in history, and Duke's technical versatility across different oil patterns and lane conditions, which have changed significantly with evolving bowling ball technology over his career, has let him remain competitive against much younger players throughout his career's later decades. Duke bowled a rare 900 series — three consecutive perfect games — in sanctioned league play in 2006, one of a small handful of bowlers in history to achieve that specific feat, a level of sustained perfection across three complete games that remains among the most statistically rare achievements in the sport. His combination of career longevity spanning five separate decades and his rare 900 series achievement have made Duke one of the most respected and statistically significant bowlers in PBA Tour history, particularly admired for his sustained relevance across such dramatically different competitive eras.
VS
Mark Roth
Mark Roth won 34 career PBA Tour titles and is widely credited with revolutionizing bowling technique through his powerful, high-revolution "power stroke" delivery, a style that generated significantly more ball hook and pin action than the smoother, more controlled deliveries common among his contemporaries. His unconventional, self-taught technique was initially considered unorthodox by traditional bowling instructors, but Roth's sustained tour success throughout the late 1970s and 1980s proved the approach's effectiveness and directly influenced a generation of subsequent bowlers who adopted variations of his higher-revolution style. Roth was named PBA Player of the Year four times, and his combination of raw power and technical innovation made him one of the most influential stylistic figures in the sport's history, credited with helping usher bowling technique away from its more traditionally conservative delivery approach. His influence on subsequent bowling technique is comparable to a significant swing-change influence in golf, and Roth's power-based delivery style became the technical foundation that many of the sport's subsequent power players built their own games around in the decades following his prime.
