North Dakota State University
North Dakota State University, founded in 1890 as the state's land-grant institution, has built one of the strongest agricultural research programs in the Northern Plains, and its plant sciences and agribusiness programs directly serve North Dakota's significant wheat and other grain-farming economy. The university's pharmacy program is one of the largest in the country by enrollment, and NDSU's engineering programs have grown substantially, reflecting the university's broader expansion beyond its founding-era agricultural focus into a more comprehensive research university. NDSU's Bison football program, competing at the FCS level, won multiple consecutive national championships during the 2010s, giving the university one of the most dominant sustained runs in college football history at that competitive level. The university's combination of genuine land-grant agricultural research strength and its unusually dominant FCS football program has made NDSU one of the more nationally recognized public universities in the Dakotas.
VS
Dickinson State University
Dickinson State University, founded in 1918, has built solid business and agriculture programs, and the university's location in western North Dakota gives it particular proximity to the state's significant Bakken oil formation, one of the largest domestic oil production regions in the country. The university's small size and its western North Dakota setting give Dickinson State a distinctive regional identity, serving a part of the state considerably more rural and geographically distant from North Dakota's larger eastern population centers. Dickinson State's business and energy-related programs benefit directly from the region's oil boom-driven economy, giving students practical, locally relevant career preparation tied to the surrounding area's dominant industry. The university's combination of its small regional scale and its direct connection to western North Dakota's oil economy has made Dickinson State a distinctive public university choice within the state's higher education system.
