New York University
New York University, founded in 1831, has grown from a relatively modest city university into one of the largest and most internationally recognized private research universities in the country, with a Washington Square campus that's fully integrated into Greenwich Village rather than set apart behind gates or a traditional quad. NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and Stern School of Business have each built reputations as among the best in their fields nationally, drawing on the university's Manhattan location to place students directly into the city's entertainment, finance, and media industries during their studies rather than only after graduation. The university's global network of degree-granting campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, alongside more than a dozen study-away sites around the world, gives NYU one of the most extensive international footprints of any American university, letting students complete substantial portions of their degree at fully NYU-operated campuses overseas. NYU's rapid rise in national rankings and application volume over the past several decades — from a solid regional university to one of the most heavily applied-to schools in the country — is frequently cited as one of the more dramatic institutional transformations in modern American higher education.
VS
Cornell University
Cornell University was founded in 1865 on the principle, stated by founder Ezra Cornell, that it would be "an institution where any person can find instruction in any study" — a deliberately broad founding mission that's part of why Cornell today spans everything from agriculture and veterinary medicine to hotel administration and engineering. As both an Ivy League university and New York State's land-grant institution, Cornell occupies a unique dual identity — several of its colleges, including agriculture and human ecology, are statutory colleges partly funded by New York State, giving in-state students access to Ivy League instruction at public-university tuition rates in those specific programs. The university's Ithaca campus, set on a dramatic gorge-carved landscape in the Finger Lakes region, is frequently cited as one of the most scenic in the country, and its remote, self-contained location has fostered an unusually tight-knit residential campus culture compared to Ivy League peers embedded in major cities. Cornell's Hotel School, one of the first programs of its kind in the world, and its veterinary college, consistently ranked among the best nationally, reflect the breadth of professional programs the university offers alongside its traditional liberal arts and engineering strength — a combination that's made it one of the most comprehensive Ivy League institutions.
