Oberlin College
Oberlin College, founded in 1833, was the first coeducational college in the United States to regularly admit women alongside men, and it became one of the first American colleges to admit Black students as well, a dual founding commitment to inclusion that predated the Civil War by decades and shaped Oberlin's institutional identity ever since. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865 and now integrated with the college, is one of the oldest continuously operating music conservatories in the country and consistently ranks among the best undergraduate music programs, letting students pursue a full liberal arts degree alongside rigorous conservatory-level musical training. Oberlin's campus was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War, and the town's and college's shared abolitionist history is preserved and actively taught as part of the institution's identity, distinguishing it from peer liberal arts colleges founded with less explicit social-reform missions. The college's combination of rigorous liberal arts academics, a top-tier attached conservatory, and a long history of student activism has made Oberlin a consistent draw for students seeking a politically engaged, artistically rich small-college environment, and its dual-degree program remains one of the only ways to combine elite liberal arts study with conservatory-level music training at a single institution.
VS
Ohio State University
Ohio State University, founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution, has grown into one of the largest single-campus universities in the country, enrolling more than 60,000 students at its Columbus campus and maintaining one of the most comprehensive academic offerings of any American public university, with more than 200 undergraduate majors. The university's Wexner Medical Center and its James Cancer Hospital are among the top-ranked cancer research and treatment centers in the country, and Ohio State's engineering, business, and agriculture programs have each built strong national reputations that reflect the university's scale and research funding. Ohio State's Buckeyes football program is one of the most valuable and successful in college sports, with multiple national championships and a passionate statewide fan base that gives the university an outsized cultural presence across Ohio well beyond its academic reputation alone. The university's sheer scale — a research budget exceeding $1.5 billion annually and one of the largest alumni networks of any American university — gives Ohio State a level of institutional resources and reach that few public universities of any size can match, cementing its position as the state's flagship despite its size sometimes drawing comparisons to a small city rather than a college campus.
