Ocean Drive, South Beach
Ocean Drive runs along South Beach's oceanfront, lined with one of the largest and best-preserved concentrations of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world — a collection of pastel-colored 1930s hotels and apartment buildings that survived a mid-20th-century period of neglect before a dedicated 1970s and '80s preservation movement fought to protect them from demolition. That preservation effort, led substantially by activist Barbara Baer Capitman, succeeded in getting the Miami Beach Architectural District added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, one of the first times an entire collection of 20th-century commercial architecture had received that level of federal historic recognition in the United States. The strip's combination of oceanfront beach access, sidewalk cafés, and nightlife built directly into the restored Art Deco hotels has made Ocean Drive one of the most internationally recognized single streets in American tourism, its distinctive neon-lit facades photographed and referenced in countless films and television productions. For a Miami attractions list, Ocean Drive is the essential "the strip that saved an architectural era" entry — a 1970s preservation fight that kept South Beach's pastel Art Deco hotels standing, now one of the most recognized streetscapes in the entire country.
VS
Pérez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami, known as PAMM, opened in its current waterfront building in 2013, designed by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron with an elevated structure built on stilts specifically to withstand South Florida's flooding and storm surge risks while still sitting directly on Biscayne Bay. The building's design incorporates hanging gardens along its exterior walkways, developed with landscape designer Patrick Blanc, softening the museum's modern concrete-and-glass structure with vertical plantings that thrive in Miami's subtropical climate rather than fighting against it the way some of the city's older European-style estates do. The museum's permanent collection focuses substantially on international and Latin American contemporary art, a curatorial focus that reflects Miami's position as a major cultural bridge between the United States and Latin America, reinforced further by the museum's role as a key venue during the annual Art Basel Miami Beach fair each December. For a Miami attractions list, PAMM is the essential "architecture built for the climate, not against it" entry — a stilted, garden-draped Herzog & de Meuron building on Biscayne Bay, anchoring Miami's role as a major hub for international contemporary art.
