Ocean Drive, South Beach
Ocean Drive runs along South Beach's oceanfront, lined with one of the largest and best-preserved concentrations of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world — a collection of pastel-colored 1930s hotels and apartment buildings that survived a mid-20th-century period of neglect before a dedicated 1970s and '80s preservation movement fought to protect them from demolition. That preservation effort, led substantially by activist Barbara Baer Capitman, succeeded in getting the Miami Beach Architectural District added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, one of the first times an entire collection of 20th-century commercial architecture had received that level of federal historic recognition in the United States. The strip's combination of oceanfront beach access, sidewalk cafés, and nightlife built directly into the restored Art Deco hotels has made Ocean Drive one of the most internationally recognized single streets in American tourism, its distinctive neon-lit facades photographed and referenced in countless films and television productions. For a Miami attractions list, Ocean Drive is the essential "the strip that saved an architectural era" entry — a 1970s preservation fight that kept South Beach's pastel Art Deco hotels standing, now one of the most recognized streetscapes in the entire country.
VS
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Vizcaya was built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter estate of businessman James Deering, an heir to the International Harvester farm equipment fortune, who commissioned a sprawling Italian Renaissance-style villa on Biscayne Bay filled with centuries of European antiques and decorative art he'd personally collected across years of travel. The estate's ten acres of formal gardens, designed by landscape architect Diplomat and horticulturist Colombian-born Diego Suarez, were laid out in a deliberately European style using stone, fountains, and sculpted hedges — an unusual and labor-intensive choice given South Florida's subtropical climate, requiring constant maintenance to keep the Mediterranean aesthetic intact against the region's heat and humidity. Deering's estate required an enormous workforce during construction, employing roughly a tenth of the entire population of Miami at the time, a scale of labor investment that reflects just how significant a single private winter home construction project was to the young city's early-20th-century economy. For a Miami attractions list, Vizcaya is the essential "a European villa transplanted to the tropics" entry — a 1920s industrialist's Biscayne Bay estate whose formal Italian gardens have been fought against Florida's climate for over a century to keep the illusion intact.
