Off the Hook Poke Market
Off the Hook Poke Market built its reputation in Honolulu around a more contemporary, generously portioned take on poke bowls, offering a wide range of build-your-own options and specialty preparations that helped introduce poke's broader mainland-facing bowl format to local Honolulu diners. Its focus on genuinely fresh, high-quality fish sourced specifically for the shop, combined with a wider variety of mix-in and topping options than more traditional shoyu-poke-only counters, positioned it within poke's broader evolution into a more customizable, contemporary dining category. The shop's smaller, more design-conscious storefront format, distinct from the market-counter style of some of Honolulu's older, more traditional poke spots, reflected the broader trend of poke restaurants adopting a more polished, fast-casual restaurant presentation as the dish's popularity grew. For a Honolulu poke list, Off the Hook is the essential "modern bowl format" entry — a contemporary, build-your-own poke shop reflecting the dish's evolution from a traditional market counter staple into a fully customizable fast-casual specialty.
VS
Ono Seafood
Ono Seafood has operated as a small, no-frills poke counter in Kapahulu, near Waikiki, for decades, consistently ranking among local residents' most cited answers for the best traditional poke in Honolulu despite its genuinely modest, market-style storefront. Its shoyu poke, built on the classic combination of raw ahi tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, green onion, and seaweed, sticks closely to the traditional formula rather than chasing the more elaborate mainland-style poke bowl trend, with lines out the door reflecting its reputation among locals specifically. The shop's minimal seating and takeout-focused format, selling poke by the pound from behind a simple counter, reflects poke's original identity as an everyday grab-and-go food rather than a sit-down restaurant experience, a distinction Ono has maintained even as poke's national popularity has grown considerably. For a Honolulu poke list, Ono Seafood is the essential "traditional, no fuss" entry — a small Kapahulu counter serving classic shoyu poke by the pound to a steady stream of local regulars who consider it the standard the rest of the island is measured against.
