Office Space
Office Space, released in 1999 and directed by Mike Judge, satirizes the soul-crushing tedium of late-1990s corporate cubicle culture through the story of a disillusioned software worker who stops caring about his job's arbitrary rules after a botched hypnotherapy session. The film was a modest box-office disappointment upon its original release but developed a massive and enduring cult following through home video and cable television, with its specific workplace grievances resonating deeply with office workers well beyond its original theatrical audience. Its satirical targets, including performance review paperwork requirements and management buzzword culture, became so widely recognized as accurate depictions of corporate dysfunction that specific phrases and scenarios from the film entered common workplace vocabulary, including references to "TPS reports." Office Space's combination of pointed corporate workplace satire and its massive delayed cult popularity has made it one of the most enduringly quoted and referenced satirical films about American office culture, with its specific critiques remaining culturally relevant decades after its release.
VS
The Truman Show
The Truman Show, released in 1998, follows a man who gradually discovers his entire life has been broadcast as a constructed reality television show without his knowledge, and the film's prescient satire of reality television and mass media surveillance arrived just before that genre's massive late-1990s and 2000s mainstream explosion. Jim Carrey's performance in the lead role, delivered with more restraint than his typically broader comedic style, demonstrated significant dramatic range and helped establish him as a legitimate dramatic actor beyond his earlier comedic stardom. The film's construction of an entirely artificial, idealized small town, built specifically as an elaborate television set the protagonist doesn't realize is fake, gave The Truman Show a distinctive visual satire of manufactured suburban perfection and media-constructed reality. The Truman Show's combination of genuine prescience regarding reality television's coming mainstream explosion and its substantive philosophical examination of free will and manufactured reality has made it one of the most influential satirical films of the late 1990s.
