Ohio State University
Ohio State University, founded in 1870 as a land-grant institution, has grown into one of the largest single-campus universities in the country, enrolling more than 60,000 students at its Columbus campus and maintaining one of the most comprehensive academic offerings of any American public university, with more than 200 undergraduate majors. The university's Wexner Medical Center and its James Cancer Hospital are among the top-ranked cancer research and treatment centers in the country, and Ohio State's engineering, business, and agriculture programs have each built strong national reputations that reflect the university's scale and research funding. Ohio State's Buckeyes football program is one of the most valuable and successful in college sports, with multiple national championships and a passionate statewide fan base that gives the university an outsized cultural presence across Ohio well beyond its academic reputation alone. The university's sheer scale — a research budget exceeding $1.5 billion annually and one of the largest alumni networks of any American university — gives Ohio State a level of institutional resources and reach that few public universities of any size can match, cementing its position as the state's flagship despite its size sometimes drawing comparisons to a small city rather than a college campus.
VS
Miami University
Miami University, founded in 1809 in Oxford, Ohio, is often called a "Public Ivy," a term for public universities offering an academic experience comparable to the Ivy League, and Miami's undergraduate-focused teaching model, with class sizes closer to a private liberal arts college than a typical large state university, is central to that reputation. The university's Farmer School of Business is consistently ranked among the top undergraduate business programs at any public university in the country, and Miami's education program has one of the longest and most respected histories in American teacher training, dating back to the university's origins as a regional teaching institution. Miami's classical, red-brick Georgian campus architecture, largely uniform across the university's core academic buildings, has made it one of the most frequently cited "beautiful campus" honorees among American universities, a distinct aesthetic identity relative to the more architecturally varied campuses of larger state flagships. The university's deliberate emphasis on small class sizes and close faculty engagement, unusual for a public university of its size, has made Miami a consistent choice for students seeking a private-college-like undergraduate experience without the corresponding private-university tuition, particularly for in-state Ohio residents.
