Olga Korbut
Olga Korbut's performance at the 1972 Munich Olympics is widely credited with single-handedly popularizing gymnastics as a global television spectacle, her expressive, emotional competing style and daring, then-unprecedented release moves on the uneven bars captivating an international audience that had never watched the sport so closely before. She won three gold medals in Munich, including the team and balance beam titles, but it was a stumble on the uneven bars during the all-around final — and her visibly tearful reaction in front of the cameras — that made her a global sympathetic figure, arguably more famous in the moment than gymnasts who'd actually won more medals. Korbut's signature move, a backward somersault on the uneven bars that came to be called the "Korbut Flip," was considered so dangerous that it was later banned from competition, but not before it had inspired a generation of young gymnasts and coaches to push the sport's acrobatic difficulty well beyond where it had been before her. Nicknamed "the Sparrow from Minsk," Korbut added two more medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics before retiring, and her Munich performance is still credited by gymnastics historians as the single moment that transformed the sport from a niche Olympic event into mainstream television programming.
VS
Kohei Uchimura
Kohei Uchimura, nicknamed "King Kohei," won the men's all-around world or Olympic title seven consecutive times between 2009 and 2016, a streak of global all-around dominance across both World Championships and Olympics that no male gymnast in history has come close to matching. His back-to-back Olympic all-around golds, at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Games, made him only the third man in Olympic history to repeat as all-around champion, and his margin of victory in Rio came down to a single event, the horizontal bar, where a near-perfect final routine overtook a Ukrainian rival who'd led for most of the competition. Uchimura's technical execution across all six men's apparatuses, rather than dominance concentrated in one or two specialties, is what set him apart from other elite gymnasts of his era — judges and rivals alike regularly cited his floor exercise and horizontal bar work as the cleanest in the sport. He also anchored Japan's team gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the country's first Olympic team title in 32 years, adding a team achievement to an individual résumé that already included more sustained all-around dominance than any male gymnast in the sport's history.
