Opera
Opera was first released in 1995 by Norwegian company Opera Software, making it one of the oldest web browsers still actively developed and distributed today, having predated both Firefox and Chrome by close to a decade. The browser built a reputation over the years for shipping innovative features well before they became industry standard, including tabbed browsing, a built-in pop-up blocker, and mouse gesture navigation, several of which were later widely adopted by competing browsers. Opera later transitioned to using the Chromium engine in 2013, similar to Microsoft Edge's later shift, and the company has continued to differentiate its browser through built-in features like a free integrated VPN and a dedicated sidebar for messaging apps. Opera's combination of its status as one of the longest continuously developed web browsers and its history of shipping features later copied industry-wide has made it one of the most historically influential browsers still in active use.
VS
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer launched in August 1995, bundled directly with Microsoft Windows 95, and it went on to dominate the browser market so completely by the early 2000s that it became the subject of a major United States antitrust case examining Microsoft's bundling practices. Internet Explorer's market dominance, at one point reaching an estimated 95 percent global browser market share, gave Microsoft outsized influence over web standards during the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period often criticized by web developers for widespread compatibility issues caused by IE-specific quirks. Microsoft officially retired Internet Explorer in June 2022, formally ending support and redirecting remaining users to Microsoft Edge, closing out a run of nearly three decades that had spanned the browser's total market dominance through its long decline against Firefox and Chrome. Internet Explorer's combination of its unprecedented historic market dominance and its central role in a landmark Microsoft antitrust case has made it one of the most consequential pieces of software in the history of the internet.
