Opera
Opera was first released in 1995 by Norwegian company Opera Software, making it one of the oldest web browsers still actively developed and distributed today, having predated both Firefox and Chrome by close to a decade. The browser built a reputation over the years for shipping innovative features well before they became industry standard, including tabbed browsing, a built-in pop-up blocker, and mouse gesture navigation, several of which were later widely adopted by competing browsers. Opera later transitioned to using the Chromium engine in 2013, similar to Microsoft Edge's later shift, and the company has continued to differentiate its browser through built-in features like a free integrated VPN and a dedicated sidebar for messaging apps. Opera's combination of its status as one of the longest continuously developed web browsers and its history of shipping features later copied industry-wide has made it one of the most historically influential browsers still in active use.
VS
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge launched in July 2015 alongside Windows 10, originally built on Microsoft's own proprietary EdgeHTML rendering engine as a replacement for the aging Internet Explorer, before Microsoft made the significant decision in 2020 to rebuild Edge entirely on Google's open-source Chromium engine. The switch to Chromium was a notable strategic reversal for Microsoft, which had maintained its own independent browser engine for decades, and the move let Edge gain broad compatibility with Chrome extensions and web standards essentially overnight. Edge ships as the default pre-installed browser on every Windows PC, giving it guaranteed distribution to hundreds of millions of Windows users, and Microsoft has since built additional features directly into Edge, including built-in Copilot AI assistant integration. Microsoft Edge's combination of its unusual mid-life rebuild onto Google's Chromium engine and its guaranteed default status on every Windows PC has made it one of the more strategically distinctive browsers in the modern market.
