Oral Roberts University
Oral Roberts University, founded in 1963 by evangelist Oral Roberts, is one of the most prominent charismatic Christian universities in the country, and its campus's distinctive modernist architecture, including the 200-foot Prayer Tower topped by a crown-shaped observation deck, reflects the university's founding-era architectural ambitions. The university requires all students to maintain a personal physical fitness program as part of its holistic educational philosophy, reflecting founder Oral Roberts's explicit institutional commitment to developing students "spirit, mind, and body" simultaneously, a health-focused stipulation unusual among American universities. ORU's business and nursing programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's continued charismatic Christian institutional identity, including mandatory chapel attendance and religious coursework, shapes campus culture throughout a student's undergraduate experience. The university's distinctive founding architecture, its holistic "spirit, mind, and body" educational philosophy, and its continued charismatic Christian mission have made Oral Roberts University one of the most visually and institutionally distinctive religious universities in the country.
VS
University of Oklahoma
The University of Oklahoma, founded in 1890, is the state's flagship public research university, and its Sooners football program, with multiple national championships across its history, has made the university one of the most historically successful athletic brands in college football. The university's meteorology program is consistently ranked among the very best in the country, benefiting directly from Oklahoma's position within "Tornado Alley," and OU's National Weather Center, housing both university researchers and federal weather agencies on a single shared campus, gives the university unusually direct access to real-time severe weather research infrastructure. OU's petroleum engineering program reflects Oklahoma's significant oil and gas industry history, and the university's business and law schools have each built solid regional reputations serving the state's professional workforce needs. The university's combination of major-program football tradition and its specific, nationally leading strength in meteorology and severe weather research — tied directly to its unique tornado-prone geographic location — has made Oklahoma one of the more distinctively specialized public flagship universities in the country.
