Osibisa
Osibisa, formed by Ghanaian and Caribbean musicians in London in 1969, brought highlife's rhythmic foundation to international rock and funk audiences, becoming one of the first African-rooted bands to achieve significant mainstream commercial success in the United Kingdom and United States. Their self-titled 1971 debut album and its distinctive album cover, featuring artwork by Robert Ellms and Roger Dean showing flying elephants, became visually iconic within progressive rock and world music circles, helping the band stand out commercially beyond its musical innovation alone. Their fusion of highlife rhythms with rock, funk, and jazz influences, performed by a genuinely international lineup of African and Caribbean musicians based in London, gave the band's sound a distinctly cosmopolitan identity relative to highlife acts that remained based in West Africa. Their combination of their genre-crossing international commercial breakthrough and their foundational role bringing highlife rhythms to Western rock and funk audiences has made Osibisa one of the most internationally significant acts in highlife's broader history.
VS
C.K. Mann
C.K. Mann became one of the defining figures of "guitar band" highlife, a specifically Ghanaian variant of the genre built around electric guitar-driven bands rather than the big-band horn sections that had defined E.T. Mensah's earlier era, helping popularize this rootsier style throughout the 1970s. His band, Carousel 7, built a devoted following specifically in Ghana's Fante-speaking coastal regions, and Mann's incorporation of traditional Fante rhythms and language into his highlife recordings gave his music a distinctly regional identity within the broader Ghanaian highlife tradition. Mann's guitar-band approach reflected a broader shift in West African popular music during the 1970s, as the expensive big-band horn format became less commercially practical and electric guitar-driven bands became the dominant format across highlife and related genres throughout the region. His combination of his foundational role in guitar-band highlife and his distinctly regional Fante musical identity has made Mann one of the most significant figures in highlife's post-big-band evolution.
