Ouachita Baptist University
Ouachita Baptist University, founded in 1886 and affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, has built solid business and pre-health programs, and its small size and Arkadelphia campus give the university a close-knit religious community distinct from the state's larger public institutions. The university shares its small college town with neighboring Henderson State University, and the two schools' long-running athletic rivalry, dating back more than a century, has become one of the most storied small-college sports rivalries in the state. Ouachita's continued Southern Baptist affiliation, including required religious coursework, shapes campus culture throughout a student's undergraduate experience, and the university's relatively selective admissions profile has made it one of the more academically rigorous private religious colleges in Arkansas. The university's combination of its Southern Baptist heritage and its storied cross-town rivalry with Henderson State has made Ouachita Baptist a distinctive small private college choice within Arkansas's higher education landscape.
VS
Arkansas State University
Arkansas State University, founded in 1909, is the state's second-largest public university, and its agricultural programs serve the significant farming economy of the Arkansas Delta region surrounding the university's Jonesboro campus. The university's aviation program and its growing engineering offerings have expanded ASU's academic breadth beyond its traditional agricultural focus, and the university's international campus partnerships, including a branch campus in Queretaro, Mexico, reflect a broader institutional strategy of global expansion. ASU's Red Wolves athletic programs have built a strong regional following, and the university's continued role serving northeastern Arkansas's Delta region gives it a distinctive regional identity relative to the state's larger Fayetteville-based flagship. The university's combination of its Delta agricultural research strength and its expanding international campus presence has made Arkansas State a distinctive complement to the University of Arkansas within the state's public university system.
