Paco de Lucía
Paco de Lucía revolutionized flamenco guitar technique across a career spanning more than four decades, introducing jazz-influenced harmonies and virtuosic speed that expanded what was technically and artistically possible within the traditionally rigid flamenco guitar tradition. His collaborations with jazz guitarists John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola in the "Guitar Trio" project introduced flamenco to entirely new international audiences, while his own solo and ensemble recordings remained rooted in flamenco's traditional forms even as he pushed their harmonic boundaries. His long partnership with singer Camarón de la Isla produced some of flamenco's most celebrated recordings, and the pairing is widely regarded as one of the most important creative partnerships in the genre's modern history. His combination of technical revolution, genre-crossing international collaborations, and his foundational partnership with Camarón has made de Lucía almost universally regarded as the greatest flamenco guitarist of all time.
VS
Gipsy Kings
Gipsy Kings brought a pop-accessible, rumba-flamenco fusion to global mainstream audiences beginning in the late 1980s, becoming by far the best-selling and most internationally recognized flamenco-rooted act in the genre's history. Formed by two families of Spanish Romani musicians who had relocated to the south of France, their self-titled 1987 breakthrough album and its signature song "Bamboleo" introduced flamenco rhythms and vocal styling to listeners who had never encountered traditional cante jondo. While purists have debated whether their pop-oriented "rumba flamenca" sound represents authentic flamenco or a commercialized adjacent genre, their commercial reach did more than any other act to introduce flamenco-adjacent sounds to worldwide audiences. Their combination of unmatched global sales and their role introducing flamenco-rooted music to mainstream international listeners has made the Gipsy Kings the most commercially significant flamenco-associated act of all time.
