Panama Canal
The Panama Canal, completed in 1914 after a construction effort that claimed thousands of workers' lives to disease and accidents, remains one of the most significant engineering achievements in maritime history, using a system of locks to raise and lower ships roughly 85 feet between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across the narrow isthmus of Panama. Canal transit cruises let passengers experience the full lock system directly from the ship's deck, watching as massive "mule" locomotives guide vessels through the narrow lock chambers with only a few feet of clearance on either side, an engineering spectacle few other cruise itineraries can offer as their central attraction. A major 2016 canal expansion added a new set of larger locks specifically to accommodate wider "Neopanamax" cargo ships and cruise vessels that had outgrown the original 1914 lock dimensions, allowing significantly larger ships to make the full transit than the canal's original engineering had ever anticipated. The Panama Canal's combination of its historic 1914 engineering achievement, the direct on-deck experience of watching a ship transit the lock system, and its major 2016 capacity expansion has made it one of the most genuinely educational and historically significant cruise itineraries in the entire industry.
VS
Antarctica
Antarctica cruises depart almost exclusively from Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, crossing the notoriously rough Drake Passage — roughly 500 miles of open ocean between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula — a crossing serious enough that most expedition ships are specifically ice-strengthened and built for the conditions. Unlike conventional cruises, most Antarctic voyages are operated as genuine expedition cruises, using smaller ships carrying a few hundred passengers or fewer specifically to comply with Antarctic Treaty regulations limiting the number of people allowed ashore at any single landing site at one time, a restriction designed to minimize human impact on the fragile ecosystem. The continent's wildlife, including multiple penguin species, seals, and whales, shows minimal fear of humans due to the near-total absence of natural land predators and limited historical human contact, letting expedition passengers observe animals at close range during guided zodiac landings on the ice and rocky shoreline. Antarctica's combination of its remote Drake Passage crossing, strict expedition-style visitor limits mandated by international treaty, and its uniquely approachable wildlife has made it one of the most logistically demanding and increasingly sought-after cruise destinations for experienced travelers seeking a genuinely different kind of trip.
