Paris, je t'aime
"Paris, je t'aime" (2006) assembles eighteen short films, each roughly five minutes long and set in a different arrondissement of Paris, directed by an international roster including the Coen brothers, Alfonso Cuarón, Alexander Payne, and Gus Van Sant. The film's structural conceit, using the city of Paris itself as the connective thread rather than a shared character or plot device, allowed for a wider stylistic range than most anthology films, spanning comedy, romance, horror, and drama across its eighteen segments. Its format inspired a subsequent wave of city-anthology films, including "New York, I Love You" and similar projects set in other global cities, establishing the format as a recognizable subgenre within anthology filmmaking. Its combination of an unusually large international directorial roster and its influential city-anthology format has made "Paris, je t'aime" one of the most structurally ambitious anthology films ever produced.
VS
Creepshow
"Creepshow" (1982) presents five horror stories directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King, styled as a live-action tribute to the lurid EC horror comics of the 1950s, complete with comic-panel transitions and deliberately theatrical performances. Its distinctive visual style, using vivid color lighting schemes and exaggerated makeup effects to evoke its comic-book source material, distinguished it sharply from the more restrained horror anthologies that had preceded it, giving the format a playful, self-aware tone. The pairing of Romero's directorial sensibility with King's source material, following their earlier separate reputations in horror, made the film a significant crossover event for genre fans of both creators upon its release. Its combination of its influential EC Comics visual style and the Romero-King creative pairing has made "Creepshow" one of the most stylistically distinctive and influential horror anthology films ever made.
