Patti Smith
Patti Smith's 1975 debut album Horses, opening with her provocative reinterpretation of Van Morrison's "Gloria" declaring "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine," is widely regarded as one of the foundational albums of the American punk movement, blending punk's raw musical energy with Smith's background as a published poet. Smith's combination of literary, poetry-influenced lyricism with punk's stripped-down musical aggression distinguished her from many of her CBGB-scene contemporaries, and her androgynous public image, deliberately avoiding conventional feminine presentation, made her one of the era's most distinctive visual and artistic figures. Her close personal and artistic relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, later chronicled in her acclaimed 2010 memoir Just Kids, gave Smith a significant connection to New York's broader downtown art scene beyond punk music specifically, reflecting the genre's origins within a wider, interconnected community of visual artists, poets, and musicians. Smith's continued influence on subsequent generations of musicians who cite her combination of literary ambition and punk musical rawness as foundational has made her one of the most critically significant figures to emerge from punk's original New York scene, and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
VS
Green Day
Green Day's 1994 album Dookie became a massive mainstream commercial breakthrough for pop-punk, selling more than 10 million copies in the United States and bringing punk-influenced rock to a significantly broader mainstream radio and MTV audience than the genre had previously reached. The band's origins in Berkeley's all-ages 924 Gilman Street punk club, a venue with strict rules against major-label bands playing its stage, led to significant tension within the punk community when Green Day signed to a major label, a controversy that reflected broader ongoing debates within punk culture about commercial success and genre authenticity. Their 2004 concept album American Idiot, a politically charged response to the George W. Bush administration and the Iraq War, marked a significant artistic and commercial reinvention more than a decade into the band's career, and its subsequent stage musical adaptation extended the album's cultural reach well beyond typical rock album audiences. Green Day's combination of accessible pop-punk songwriting and, later, explicitly political concept-album ambition has made them one of the most commercially successful punk-descended bands in history, and their continued relevance across three distinct decades reflects a level of sustained mainstream punk-adjacent success matched by very few of their genre peers.
