Patti Smith
Patti Smith's 1975 debut album Horses, opening with her provocative reinterpretation of Van Morrison's "Gloria" declaring "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine," is widely regarded as one of the foundational albums of the American punk movement, blending punk's raw musical energy with Smith's background as a published poet. Smith's combination of literary, poetry-influenced lyricism with punk's stripped-down musical aggression distinguished her from many of her CBGB-scene contemporaries, and her androgynous public image, deliberately avoiding conventional feminine presentation, made her one of the era's most distinctive visual and artistic figures. Her close personal and artistic relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, later chronicled in her acclaimed 2010 memoir Just Kids, gave Smith a significant connection to New York's broader downtown art scene beyond punk music specifically, reflecting the genre's origins within a wider, interconnected community of visual artists, poets, and musicians. Smith's continued influence on subsequent generations of musicians who cite her combination of literary ambition and punk musical rawness as foundational has made her one of the most critically significant figures to emerge from punk's original New York scene, and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
VS
Sex Pistols
The Sex Pistols existed as an active recording band for barely two and a half years, releasing only one studio album, 1977's Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, yet that brief, chaotic run is still widely credited with launching British punk rock as a mainstream cultural phenomenon. The band's confrontational public persona, cultivated partly by manager Malcolm McLaren, included deliberately provocative television appearances and the banned single "God Save the Queen," released during Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977 and viewed by many as a direct, calculated act of anti-establishment provocation. Bassist Sid Vicious, who replaced original member Glen Matlock, became as famous for his self-destructive public persona and eventual 1978 arrest for the killing of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen as for his actual musical contributions, and his own death from a heroin overdose while awaiting trial cemented one of punk's most tragic and widely mythologized narratives. Despite their brief active lifespan, the Sex Pistols' combination of raw musical aggression, deliberately provocative public behavior, and direct confrontation with British social and political institutions established much of punk's foundational template, and their influence on the genre's subsequent development remains disproportionate to their genuinely small recorded output.
