Paul Anderson
Paul Anderson won Olympic gold in the super-heavyweight category at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and his subsequent claimed backlift of more than 6,000 pounds, performed as an exhibition rather than official competition, is still cited in some record contexts as the greatest weight ever lifted by a human being, though the exact figure and measurement method remain debated among strength sport historians. Anderson's combination of extraordinary raw strength and a relatively short, powerfully built frame made him one of the most physically distinctive strongmen of his era, and his competitive weightlifting achievements came before he transitioned into professional strongman exhibitions and motivational speaking later in his career. He founded the Paul Anderson Youth Home in Georgia, a residential program for troubled youth that he continued operating for decades after his competitive athletic career ended, extending his public legacy well beyond his lifting records into sustained direct social service work. Anderson's combination of Olympic gold, his still-debated but legendary backlift feat, and his decades of subsequent youth service work have made him one of the most mythologized figures in American strength sports history, with his exact numerical records less central to his legacy than his broader larger-than-life reputation within the sport.
VS
Vasily Alekseyev
Vasily Alekseyev won Olympic gold in the super-heavyweight category at both the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympics, and across his career he broke the world record in Olympic weightlifting a combined 80 times, a total that remains one of the most statistically dominant individual records in the sport's history. Alekseyev became the first man in weightlifting history to lift more than 500 pounds in the clean and jerk, a milestone that made him a significant symbol of Soviet athletic dominance during the Cold War era, when Soviet weightlifters and other strength athletes were held up domestically as evidence of the country's broader system's success. His imposing physical presence and his sustained record-breaking pace throughout the 1970s made Alekseyev one of the most recognizable strength athletes in the world during his competitive prime, and his rivalry with other national super-heavyweight lifters became a significant storyline within Cold War-era international sports coverage. Alekseyev's combined total of 80 world records across his competitive career remains one of the largest individual world-record tallies in any Olympic sport, and his sustained dominance through the 1970s established the Soviet Union's continued strength in super-heavyweight weightlifting for the following decade.
