Perplexity
Perplexity launched in 2022, founded by a small team including former OpenAI and Meta researchers, positioning itself specifically as an "answer engine" rather than a traditional search engine or general-purpose chatbot — designed to directly answer a user's question in natural language while citing its specific sources inline, rather than returning a list of links to click through. That citation-forward approach directly addressed one of the most persistent criticisms of AI chatbots generally — the tendency to state incorrect information confidently without any way for a user to verify it — by building source attribution into the core product experience from the very beginning rather than as an afterthought. Perplexity has positioned itself as a genuine competitive threat to traditional web search specifically, drawing comparisons to Google in a way most competing AI chatbots haven't emphasized as directly, and the company has continued expanding into more specialized research and shopping-assistant features built around that same real-time, cited-answer format. Perplexity's combination of a citation-first answer format and its direct positioning as a search-engine alternative rather than a general chatbot has made it one of the more distinctly focused AI products in a market increasingly crowded with broader general-purpose assistants.
VS
ChatGPT
ChatGPT launched from OpenAI on November 30, 2022, and its growth remains one of the fastest consumer product adoptions in software history — reportedly reaching an estimated 100 million users within about two months of launch, a pace that caught even OpenAI's own leadership by surprise and helped trigger the broader wave of generative-AI investment and product launches that followed across the entire tech industry. The product's core interface — a simple back-and-forth chat window — was a deliberate simplification of the underlying GPT language model technology OpenAI had already been developing for years, and that plain conversational format turned out to be the missing piece that made large language models genuinely accessible to non-technical users for the first time. ChatGPT has since expanded well beyond text chat to include image generation, voice conversation, web browsing, and the ability to run code and analyze uploaded files, evolving from a single-purpose chatbot into a broader general-purpose assistant that OpenAI has continued to update with new underlying models at a rapid pace. ChatGPT's combination of first-mover timing, a radically simple interface, and OpenAI's continued rapid iteration has made it the single most recognized consumer AI product in the world, and the name itself has become a generic shorthand for AI chatbots the way "Google" became shorthand for web search.
