Pete Seeger
Pete Seeger, a founding member of the influential folk group The Weavers, helped popularize traditional and topical folk songs to mainstream American audiences throughout the 1950s before the group's career was significantly damaged by Cold War-era blacklisting over Seeger's associations with left-wing political organizations. His refusal to testify against colleagues before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955, citing his First Amendment rights rather than the more legally protective Fifth Amendment, resulted in a contempt of Congress conviction that was later overturned on appeal, but the episode significantly damaged his mainstream career for years afterward. Seeger's songwriting and arranging work on songs including "If I Had a Hammer" and his popularization of "We Shall Overcome" as a civil rights movement anthem made him one of the most significant musical figures connecting folk music to American political and social activism throughout the mid-20th century. His decades-long environmental activism, including his sustained campaign to clean up New York's Hudson River through both direct advocacy and his own sailing sloop dedicated to the cause, extended Seeger's activist legacy well into his later life, and his combination of musical and political significance made him one of the most historically important figures in American folk music.

Iron & Wine
Iron & Wine, the recording name of singer-songwriter Sam Beam, built his early reputation on intimate, whispered-vocal home recordings that established a quiet, deliberately lo-fi aesthetic within the broader early-2000s folk and indie folk revival movement. His cover of the Postal Service's "Such Great Heights," featured prominently in the 2004 film Garden State's soundtrack, introduced Iron & Wine's stripped-down folk sound to a significantly broader mainstream audience beyond his existing indie folk following. Beam's gradual evolution across subsequent albums toward more fully arranged, orchestrally layered production reflected a willingness to expand beyond his earlier minimalist bedroom-recording aesthetic while retaining the intimate, literary songwriting quality that had defined his earliest work. His combination of genuinely intimate early folk recordings and his significant role in the broader 2000s indie folk revival, partly driven by prominent film and television soundtrack placements, has made Iron & Wine one of the most influential figures in that specific era's folk music resurgence.
