Phil Donahue
Phil Donahue launched "The Phil Donahue Show" in 1967 in Dayton, Ohio, and it's widely credited as the show that established the modern daytime talk show format, including its now-standard convention of the host walking directly into the studio audience to take questions and comments. Donahue's willingness to tackle serious, often controversial social and political topics, including civil rights, feminism, and LGBTQ issues, distinguished his show from the lighter celebrity-focused entertainment format that came to dominate much of the genre in subsequent decades. The show ran for over two decades and moved to national syndication, becoming the dominant daytime talk program of its era before facing increasing competition in the 1980s and '90s from a new generation of hosts including Oprah Winfrey, whose own show eventually surpassed Donahue's ratings. Phil Donahue's combination of establishing the modern audience-participation talk show format and his willingness to engage serious social issues has made him one of the most foundationally influential figures in the entire history of daytime talk television.
VS
Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson, the original winner of "American Idol" in 2002, launched "The Kelly Clarkson Show" in national syndication in 2019, building the program around her musical background with frequent live performances alongside typical daytime talk interview segments. The show's "Kellyoke" recurring segment, featuring Clarkson performing live cover songs with her house band at the start of each episode, became a widely shared viral video staple and a key differentiator from competing daytime talk shows without a musically trained host. Clarkson's transition from reality-competition-show winner to Grammy-winning recording artist to daytime talk show host reflected a genuinely unusual multi-decade career arc, and her show quickly became one of the most successful new daytime programs to launch in the 2010s. Kelly Clarkson's combination of her musical-performance-driven show format and her unusual career arc from reality show winner to talk show host has made her one of the most distinctive hosts in contemporary daytime talk television.
