Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art's current building, a Greek Revival structure completed in 1928, holds one of the largest art collections in the United States, spanning more than 240,000 objects across a range of periods and mediums including a particularly significant collection of arms and armor and an entire reconstructed Japanese temple gate. The museum's front steps became a global cultural touchstone almost entirely by accident, thanks to the 1976 film "Rocky," in which Sylvester Stallone's character trains by running up the 72 steps and raising his arms in triumph at the top — a scene that turned an ordinary museum entrance into one of the most visited and imitated tourist photo spots in the entire country. A bronze statue of the fictional boxer Rocky Balboa, originally commissioned as a prop for a later film in the series, now stands permanently near the base of the steps, and the museum has had to navigate an ongoing, occasionally uneasy relationship between its own serious art collection and its unplanned status as a movie landmark. For a Philadelphia attractions list, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is the essential "the museum that became a movie landmark by accident" entry — a 1928 Greek Revival building housing over 240,000 art objects, whose front steps are more famous worldwide for a boxing movie than for anything inside.
VS
Eastern State Penitentiary
Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829, built around a radical new theory of criminal rehabilitation called the "Pennsylvania System," which held prisoners in complete solitary confinement with the explicit goal of inducing genuine penitence through isolation and reflection — the origin of the modern word "penitentiary" itself. The prison's radial floor plan, with cell blocks extending outward from a central surveillance hub like spokes on a wheel, was copied by more than 300 prisons built subsequently around the world, making Eastern State one of the most architecturally influential buildings in the entire history of criminal justice design, despite the isolation-based Pennsylvania System itself eventually being abandoned as psychologically damaging. The prison held notable inmates including bank robber Willie Sutton, who participated in one of the facility's most famous escape attempts via a tunnel, and gangster Al Capone, who served part of a sentence there in a relatively well-appointed cell that visitors can still view today. For a Philadelphia attractions list, Eastern State Penitentiary is the essential "the prison that named the concept" entry — an 1829 radial-design penitentiary whose solitary-confinement theory literally gave English its word for the institution, now a preserved, partially ruined historic site open for tours.
