Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art's current building, a Greek Revival structure completed in 1928, holds one of the largest art collections in the United States, spanning more than 240,000 objects across a range of periods and mediums including a particularly significant collection of arms and armor and an entire reconstructed Japanese temple gate. The museum's front steps became a global cultural touchstone almost entirely by accident, thanks to the 1976 film "Rocky," in which Sylvester Stallone's character trains by running up the 72 steps and raising his arms in triumph at the top — a scene that turned an ordinary museum entrance into one of the most visited and imitated tourist photo spots in the entire country. A bronze statue of the fictional boxer Rocky Balboa, originally commissioned as a prop for a later film in the series, now stands permanently near the base of the steps, and the museum has had to navigate an ongoing, occasionally uneasy relationship between its own serious art collection and its unplanned status as a movie landmark. For a Philadelphia attractions list, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is the essential "the museum that became a movie landmark by accident" entry — a 1928 Greek Revival building housing over 240,000 art objects, whose front steps are more famous worldwide for a boxing movie than for anything inside.
VS
Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell was originally cast in London in 1752 for the Pennsylvania State House, and it cracked almost immediately upon its first test ring after arriving in Philadelphia, requiring local craftsmen to melt it down and recast it twice before producing the bell that hangs today, ironically making the current bell itself already a repaired object even before its most famous crack ever appeared. The bell's now-iconic large crack developed sometime in the early-to-mid 19th century, likely from a widening hairline fracture rather than a single dramatic event, and it eventually grew severe enough that the bell was retired from ringing entirely to prevent further damage, freezing it permanently in its current, instantly recognizable cracked state. The bell became closely associated with the abolitionist movement in the 1830s, when anti-slavery activists adopted it as a symbol specifically because of its inscription — a Biblical passage reading "Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land" — using the bell's imagery in their own publications well before it became a broader national symbol of independence. For a Philadelphia attractions list, the Liberty Bell is the essential "cracked and still iconic" entry — an already-once-recast 1752 bell whose signature flaw became inseparable from its symbolism, adopted by abolitionists decades before it became shorthand for American independence itself.
