Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art's current building, a Greek Revival structure completed in 1928, holds one of the largest art collections in the United States, spanning more than 240,000 objects across a range of periods and mediums including a particularly significant collection of arms and armor and an entire reconstructed Japanese temple gate. The museum's front steps became a global cultural touchstone almost entirely by accident, thanks to the 1976 film "Rocky," in which Sylvester Stallone's character trains by running up the 72 steps and raising his arms in triumph at the top — a scene that turned an ordinary museum entrance into one of the most visited and imitated tourist photo spots in the entire country. A bronze statue of the fictional boxer Rocky Balboa, originally commissioned as a prop for a later film in the series, now stands permanently near the base of the steps, and the museum has had to navigate an ongoing, occasionally uneasy relationship between its own serious art collection and its unplanned status as a movie landmark. For a Philadelphia attractions list, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is the essential "the museum that became a movie landmark by accident" entry — a 1928 Greek Revival building housing over 240,000 art objects, whose front steps are more famous worldwide for a boxing movie than for anything inside.
VS
Reading Terminal Market
Reading Terminal Market opened in 1893, built beneath the train shed of the Reading Railroad's terminal, and it's operated continuously ever since, surviving the railroad's own eventual decline and the terminal building's conversion into part of the Pennsylvania Convention Center to remain one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the entire country. The market has long housed a mix of Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish and Mennonite) vendors alongside a broad range of other food stalls, giving it a genuinely distinctive combination of traditional rural Pennsylvania farm products sold directly alongside the diverse immigrant food culture more typical of a dense urban market. Reading Terminal Market has become closely associated with Philadelphia's cheesesteak culture specifically, with several of the market's vendors regularly cited alongside the city's freestanding cheesesteak shops in debates over the best version of the dish, giving the market genuine culinary standing beyond its historic novelty. For a Philadelphia attractions list, Reading Terminal Market is the essential "the market that outlasted its own railroad" entry — an 1893 market built under a train shed that's survived the railroad's decline entirely, now home to both Pennsylvania Dutch farm stalls and some of the city's most debated cheesesteaks.
